Special Effects Filter

I got a new DSLR camera today…and need a filter for the lens…?

but mainly just to protect the lens, not necessarily for any special effects as I still have to figure this camera all out. It’s a Sony Alpha. It also accepts Minoltal lenses. What filter should I get? I’m new at SLRs!

Skylight filters remove ultraviolet light, which can cause a bit of haziness in photographs. Some of them also remove varying amounts of blue, to remove a bluish tint caused by the UV.

The effect is subtle, and the filters are cheap. So they are often used as lens protectors, to leave on all the time.

However, I believe they sell lens protector “filters” nowadays that have no optical effect whatsoever. I don’t see much point in those, unless they are much cheaper than skylight filters.
