Home burglaries: Discovering simple ways to help prevent them

Before we cover things you can do to help prevent a home burglary, it’s essential to discuss when the burglaries happen, who is it that is committing the burglaries, and what is usually stolen.

Almost all home burglaries happen during the day, when people are away on a vacation or at work. The hot summer months are when most burglaries occur. February actually has the fewest number of home burglaries compared to the other months.

Burglaries in a residence are usually committed by males less than 25 years of age. The thieves are almost always trying to take off with small objects that are easy to carry away and convert to quick cash that is needed for living expenses and most often, illegal drugs.

The favorite items of theft are cash, guns, jewelry and watches, computers and DVD players, and CDs. All of this stuff is easily concealed in a backpack as the burglar exits the home, and are simple to convert to to cash.

Criminals never want to do any extra work if they don’t need to, so they always look for an unlocked door or window. And, unlike most stereotypes where the bad guy carries a fancy lock pick kit, thieves like to use usual household tools like screwdrivers, pliers,pry bars and hammers.

Although it may seem like burglaries in a residence are quite random and occur on a whim, this is almost never the case. The criminal will almost always go for the easiest house. This is the dwelling with the best access, good spots to hide, and a good means of escape.

Burglars always go for the easy target! Experienced burglars will avoid your home if it seems too difficult to gain access. So the best way to help deter burglaries is to make it very hard for a thief to break in.

Seasoned criminals choose an entry point that has the most cover, and usually has the weakest lock. This is almost always the garage door, then the back door, and then the front door.

But first let’s take a look at some pointers for the types of locks
you should think about:

- Install a superior quality, heavy-duty, deadbolt lock that has a one-inch throw bolt (The part that goes into the door when locked)

- If you have to use a “knob-in-lock”, make sure you install one that’s superior quality, heavy duty, and has a “dead-latch” feature.

- A “dead-latch” mechanism prevents a credit card or shim from being used to pop open the lock.

- A top quality deadbolt will have what’s called a beveled case. This almost always prevents the use of channel lock pliers to break off the lock pins and gain access.

- Invest in the extra money and get Grade One or Grade Two locks for exterior doors, as these help stop pounding, and lock picking.

The expert tip:

It is quite common to leave a duplicate set of keys inside the automobile. Burglars are well aware of this and first look inside your automobile for house keys and valuables. Don’t fail to lock your car, even if it’s “safely” in the garage.

Now let’s discuss doors.

Review these tips below when considering doors in your dwelling.

- Make sure you spend the extra cash and buy solid core or metal doors for every outside entryways. Almost all cheap exterior doors will have hollow cores, and can very easily be kicked through with not much effort by a determined bad guy.

- If the door doesn’t come with one, put in a peephole that is a wide-angle 160¬?, placed no higher than 58 inches from the floor.

- Don’t fail to make sure the door comes with a heavy-duty, four-screw, strike plate with 3-inch screws to sink deep into a wooden door frame. The strike plate is almost certainly the weakest piece of the door, as this is where the deadbolt secures the door in unison with the door jamb. Poorly made doors are plagued with very soft wooden moldings that are almost always lightly tacked onto the door frame. It just takes a strong kick or shove with a shoulder to rip the lightweight molding away and force the door open.

- Also, make sure that the screws that hold the door hinges in place have at least two 3 inch screws per hinge plate.

- Always make sure that the screws holding the knob lock strike plate are longer ones as well.

We always suggest investing the extra money to get good solid core or metal exterior doors, and strong, heavy duty locks. Remember that an experienced criminal can identify good doors and good locks.

It is very likely that the indication of these upgrades will cause the burglar to think twice and move onto an easier target.
