Is it a good idea to have a Lens hood on your slr?

I always been told just to use a filter lens protector on my slr but everyone seems to have hoods on now days?!? If I was to get a hood do I have to take off the filter as I do like having a bit of protection on the lens

p.s. I always use a UV filter to protect the front element. Many swear at them–and many swear they can’t live without them. Think abou this–if your lens is $1,500 (like the one here), would you like some protection from dust and stuff for it?
