Protect Filter Why

Why are my fish dead?
right yesterday i went to pets at home and my filter had broken so i had to buy another, so the ‘good’ bacteria to grow, you have to leave it for 24hours, but at the beginning you add the water treatment for the tap water.. then at the end you add another product to protect the fish or something… so i did all this and added my fish (4 of them) and i didnt feed them as they were getting used to there surroundings, so i come back after this party, and i find them all dead… but i dont understand as i followed this pets at home workers instructions…?
you want to bear in mind that 24 hours is the LEAST amount of time you are recommended to wait. it could also matter the type of fish you are adding, goldfish produce a lot of ammonia and 4 is way too many to add at once. tropical community fish (guppies, small tetras) are very sensitive to water change and your water could have been to “sterile” to support their fickle life.
it could also matter on the size of your tank… smaller tanks have a harder time maintaining water quality, and larger tanks need more than 24hours to set up that beneficial bacteria.
whatever you do from this point. DO NOT change more than 25 percent of your water (to detoxify from the dead fish) and wait a few more days and have your water tested ( a free service at most pet stores) and then add appropriately.
also at said pet stores ask to speak with the managers, they usually know more than the associates when you’re having a hard time.
