Lens Protector Hood

Anyone have suggestions for Camera Filters and LCD protectors?

I have a canon T1i with the EF-S 17-55mm kit lens. I am looking to get two things for it: A lens filter (maybe 2), and a 3 inch LCD protector. I am absolutely overwhelmed by the amount of choices available, and so, i need someone with experience to offer me suggestions as to what brand to get.

Also, I am looking at the dinky little lens hood that Canon offers for the 18-55mm, and I’m not quite sure if it’ll actually reduce any flare with its small size. Does anyone have anything to say about the Canon EW-60C Lens Hood?
