Can someone help me figure out my old SLR lenses for use on a new DSLR?

I have these old SLR’s and lenses and I am wanting to buy a new netry level DSLR but was unsure if the lenses would work on the current models for sale. Please help I am not very knowledgable in this at all.

Large Lens – Vivitar 80-200MM 1:4.5 , Auto Zoom , No 22936279, C/FD Lens, Made in Japan 55MM

The first two lenses are Canon’s old manual-focus bayonet mount, and the second two lenses are Minolta’s old manual-focus bayonet mount.

In both cases, the mounts have long since been abandoned. You can get expensive adapters to put them on a modern Canon or Sony DSLR, but the adapters have glass elements that (a) degrade the image quality, and (b) have a slight telephoto effect. People who have tried them generally don’t recommend them. You can knock out the glass elements of the adapter, or maybe find an adapter that doesn’t have glass elements, but then you won’t get infinity focus, so the lens is then only good for close-up work. Since none of the four lenses are macro lenses, that probably isn’t a useful option.

Also, none of those lenses have much market value, so it would make more economic sense to sell them on ebay and get other old lenses that are easier to use on modern DSLRs.

The two 50mm lenses might be of interest to people who are still shooting film with an old manual-focus Canon or Minolta. But the two zooms probably have hardly any market value. They were cheap, mediocre-qualilty lenses in their day, and anyone still shooting manual-focus Canon or Minolta can probably find much better lenses very cheaply.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t use old lenses on modern DSLRs. Lots of people buy and use very old, inexpensive lenses for their modern DSLRs. Pentax/Samsung has the best backward compatibility with old lenses, followed closely by Nikon. Olympus is a distant third, with Canon and Minolta (later Konica-Minolta, and now Sony) bringing up the rear (in backward compatibility with old lenses). For some of the brands, it depends on whether you’re willing to saw off parts of old lenses.

You might want to check with experts of each brand on what the options are for old lenses. I can tell you about Pentax/Samsung:

With a Pentax or Samsung DSLR, you can use any lens ever made for a Pentax or Samsung digital or 35mm SLR. For screw-mount lenses (also known as M42 universal screw mount, or Pentax screw mount), you’ll need an inexpensive adapter, which does not have any glass elements to degrade the image quality.

I have several old lenses for my Pentax DSLR. It’s fun to find cool old lenses cheaply. For example, I paid $35 for a very sharp, near-mint Polaris 135mm f/1.8. A modern equivalant is $1,000 – $1,500, but it won’t take better pictures.
