I am getting a Nikon D80….????

My very first DSLR (my first SLR period). I’m not that great with photography, but am looking forward to using this specifically to take competition photos at horse shows. Camera arrives in a week and I have read through the NikonD80 field guide, and 2 other photography books. I am getting the 18-135mm kit lens with it. Still learning all about what an f-stop is and ISO, but the field guide really helped with that.

Can you see the image you want to take on the LCD ? (without looking through the viewfinder?)

Would f/4 & 100 ISO be good for fast action pictures of horses jumping/running barrels with no blur?

I am terribly new to all this and currently have a Sony Cybershot which I can get some decent pictures with sometimes. I am only wanting to do this amateur at the horse shows, but want to learn to use the camera well.

Any other recommendations on learning & using this camera well especially for the use I want it for.

The 18-135 is a great range for a first all-around lens. You’ll enjoy it.

ISO is the sensitivity of film (or of the digital camera’s sensor at the time). High ISO is used to take images in low-light. However, you get a lot more noise with high ISO. I never take my camera off ISO 100 simply because I like my images to come out noise-free.

It’s kind of hard to explain the origins of the f/stop, but this is what you need to know: it’s a measurement of how wide open the lens is, and how much light it’s letting in. A low f/number (like f/1.4) means that the lens is WIDE open. A high one (like f/64) means that it is a pinpoint, and will not let much light in at all. Each full f/stop your go up means that the lens will let half as much light in as before. Typically, shutter speeds go up twice as much as well, so that you can get the same exposure but with different apertures and shutter speeds. For example, I could use f/5.6 at 1/60s and use f/4 at 1/125s and get the same exposure.

Both aperture and shutter speed control the amount of light let onto the image. However, since we can use them together, we can use their individual properties to get the effects that we want.

Aperture controls the depth of field, or how much of an image is in focus. A wide aperture like f/2.8 will have a shallow depth of field and will be useful in taking portraits or only drawing attention to the foreground or background. A small aperture, like f/32, will keep a lot of things in focus.

Shutter speed controls the amount of blur. If you were taking pictures of these horses moving, you will need at least 1/125s to freeze their motion. Slow shutter speeds (less than 1/60s) require a tripod (or a VR lens) to get rid of the blur that results naturally from your hand’s shaking.

You don’t have to put your camera in complete manual mode (M) (and I suggest that you don’t until your know what you’re doing.) Put it in A (Aperture-priority) or S (Shutter-priority) so you can pick the effect that you want and then the camera will compensate for what it needs.

Most importantly, though, always be taking pictures and trying new things. Observe what’s going on, compose your pictures, don’t just take them, and have fun!
