Filter Adapter Tube

Is there a better filter adapter tube than the one supplied with my new Sony DSC H-7?

The supplied adapter tube requires large filter sizes but I have all sorts of 49mm filters and aaccessories. The earlier Sony adaptors were smaller but I tried a friend’s and it didn’t fit.

Unfortunately, there isn’t. The filter thread sizes for those cameras are specified for a reason. if you try to use smaller filters or adapters, chances are you’ll encounter some sort of image distortion- usually vignetting (darkening of the edges of the image), so you’ll probably just have to accompany the larger filter size.

Ok, in reply to your message: I was not aware of your experiences as a pro, no disrespect, but I didn’t know of your experience level, so I apologize for that, I just try to address as much experience level as possible if it’s not indicated.

My only concern over a filter adapter tube would be the diameter of it such that it will fit the H7. Are your prior filters from another H-model camera? If they were, maybe you could modify that lens adapter so that it will fit on your H7.

I’m just wondering if the diameter of the lens has changed, because if it has, then it may make things more difficult. What H series camera is your friend’s tube from? The biggest difficulty I see would be your stepdown ring approach. The adapter for the H7 is a 74mm filter size, and I’m having a hard time finding any 74mm -> 49mm stepdown rings online. If you could get the lens thread down to anything 62mm or smaller, you could use a stepdown ring like in the link I’ve provided.

Would it possible to use a tool like a Dremel to modify an adapter similar to your friends so that it could accompany the lens on the H7? If the adapter’s walls are thick enough, maybe you could take off just enough that it would fit.

So, I was not trying purposefully to not be helpful. It sucks that Sony has stuck a 74mm filter size on that lens adapter- those filters are prohibitively expensive, and there aren’t that many out there. I tried to find some earlier Sony adapters that might fit the H7 and allow for 49mm filters, but there don’t seem to be any adapters that will fit the H7 and supply anything else besides a 74mm filter mount. You could try a series of stepdowns, like 74 -> 72 etc down to 49. I’m sorry again for the misunderstanding earlier, and I hope this elaborates more on my attempt to help.
