What is the use of “filters” for DSLR or SLR cameras?

i’m a new to the SLR and DSLR world and I’ve been hearing about camera filters. I’m going to purchase my first DSLR camera (canon xti) this week and I would like some advice on what’s the use of filters on a camera. Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

In the old (film) days, there were all kinds of filters- but that was before the days of photoshop. Now- it’s so easy to shade portions of your image, or adjust color, you don’t need filters for that any more.

However- there are still some good filters to have.

1. a regular UV filter. It doesn’t do a whole lot, but it will protect your lens from getting scratched- so, it’s a cheap investment.

2. a polarizer. this filter rotates and can polarize the light entering the camera. This will cut down on reflections, darken the sky, add contrast to clouds and such. A must have for landscape and outdoor photography.

there are others- but I’d say that these are the two most important. You may also see IR filters, neutral density filters and, of course, a variety of colors/color correcting filters.
